Friday Question: Cupcakes vs. Muffins

Thanks to Dezzy, I have a Friday Question for this week.  Cupcakes vs. muffins.  I love muffins, both sweet and savoury.  But now that I've got this new Babycakes machine (for $5), I'm learning my way around a cupcake.

Which is fun, because I'm not a big cake baker or eater.  Though I'll never say no to a carrot cake.   If you give me carrot cake, I have to eat it.

As for muffins, gosh, I have so many.  Pumpkin Spice, Banana Nut, Banana Chocolate Chip, Blueberry, Cranberry Orange, Apple Spice Crumble, the list goes on if we're talking muffins.  Oh my gosh, I forgot corn muffin.  I love those.

One time I wrote a corn muffin recipe.  Then I went back another time to remake it, only I doubled my butter because I can't read, but I tell you what.  Best corn muffin in the history of ever.  We still talk about it.

So which do you eat most often?

Cupcakes or muffins?  Sweet or savoury?  Is there one cupcake and/or muffin that you cannot refuse?

  1. Don't hate me, but neither. We rarely have muffins and cakes are few and far between - and never as cupcakes. Bagels? Now that is a weekly thing!

    1. How about what you make in your doughnut maker? Any combo you like over the other?

Bagels, now you're talking my language. I bake those all the time. Best bread, ever.

      What is your favorite bagel?

    1. Icing, or frosting, is good on cupcakes, but I don't think it needs frosting to be a real cupcake.

For me, personally it's about the texture. Airy and light for a cake, dense and sometimes chunky (nuts/fruit), for a muffin.

    2. If it's cream cheese icing all the better. That's why I like carrot cake muffins. Yum… and with real butter please!

    3. A good cream cheese frosting is nice.

  5. I love muffins...until I saw the calorie count on one. Yikes! Plain cupcakes are better that way, but who wants to eat a plain cupcake? Not me! So basically, I stay away from both. I get enough empty calories as it is! :)

There is a difference, I think though. Muffins are like little breads. Cupcakes are little cakes. You don't confuse bread and cake, do you?

By the way, I love your Friday Question picture. Kind of reminds me of the picture I drew for my blog today. Isn't Paint fun? Hee hee.

    1. I don't think of muffins as breads. To me, the bake is different on the two. And I love them both.

Have you ever baked a good healthy muffin? One that's not filled with empty calories? Good stuff, I tell ya. Really good eats.

That's the first time I used Paint here. For all the other stuff on here, I've use Xara. Both programs are fun.

Be over to see yours after this.

  6. I'd rather have cupcakes

  7. Prior to age 30 -- cupcakes. Nowadays -- muffins. I have less and less of a sweet tooth as I get older (and I find cupcakes generally sweeter and more "dessert-y").

  8. We are absolutely a muffin house. My children aren't really cake eaters so cupcakes sit around forever.

  9. Lemon is wonderful and blueberry. Never had them together. Must try this combo.

    Thanks.

  10. Okay, when I say bread, I mean bread like banana nut bread or pumpkin bread. Not the yeast kind. :)

  11. I say bake muffins then put icing on them. :) I love both. My favorite muffin is apple-cinnamon. My favorite cupcake is...well...anything fruit-flavored with cream cheese icing.

  12. Well, shock horror, I don't eat cakes - not my kinda thing. And as for icing ... oh - my - god ... just thinking about it makes me feel positively ill!

I do, however, devour most things savoury. So, for me, it would be muffins all the way. And bread. Love bread.

    2. Cheese muffins are rather nice. Or perhaps with spinach, fetta, rosemary, pumpkin and zucchini, sun dried tomatoes etc... to name but a few. As long as they're not sweet, I'm as happy as a pig in mud.

    3. Those all sound interesting. I am curious to bake a muffin with Feta. Never used dried tomatoes before, but that sounds interesting. Thanks fir the idea.

    1. Blueberries are killer. Do you like frosting or a crumble or plain topped muffin? I like mine with a crumble top. Heaven. Just heaven.

  16. I'm a fan of savoury things - like cheese scones. Do you have a "double butter" recipe for those, because I want it!

Like now! Yum, double butter yum! You know, really, if things are made with margarine I gag… it's true.

Happy muffin and cupcake making… bake on!

    1. No, sadly I missplaced my double butter corn muffin formula. I'm not a fan of using marge, but I do love using coconut oil instead of butter. Great stuff to work with, if you get a chance.

  17. I don't eat either one regularly, but when given a choice, I usually choose the muffin. And I'm most likely to choose something simple (boring) like a bran muffin. I love pumpkin, so if something is available with that in it, that's a choice, too.

And yes yes yes to carrot cake! I only recently tried it and discovered that I love it. I can't believe I've gone this far in my life without carrot cake in it. Such deprivation... :)

  18. I would say cupcake because I make them the most often, but I wouldn't turn down a muffin. My favourite cupcakes are just vanilla (but made special with food colour - it doesn't change the taste, but it feels like it makes it taste better because they look so neat). And my favourite frosting is Marshmallow buttercream. It is the best!
