Magic in a Bowl

We missed our Sunday roast (bird with fixins), so the plan was to do it tonight, but I changed my mind. I'll go with more soup for me and maybe chicken chunked salad with potatoes for Frankenberry.

Yesterday, Jan asked what ingredients were in my soup and basically, I start with a homemade stock or broth (this week it's green veggie broth), then I chuck in fresh ginger, garlic and whatever vedge I have have. But that's how soups are for me. No set ingredients list. No rules. Just chuck it in, taste and voila. Magic in a bowl.

So, whatcha eating today? Is it yummy? Do tell. Do tell.

  1. I need to make more soups! Dinner tonight will be baked chicken breasts and rice and broccoli, pretty simple after a busy day!

  3. I just made my first pork tenderloin roast, with a jerk marinade. It's resting for ten minutes then we'll see, kind of exciting.

  4. My wife cooks and bakes like that and comes up with some good stuff.
What sucks is she never remembers what she did...

  5. I had a slice of leftover pizza and a protein bar.

  6. You cook like I do! Although tonight I used a recipe to make an awesome meat-free shepherd's pie with a sweet potato and chopped almond crust. The best part is there's enough for dinner tomorrow night, too.

    1. Some things like soups and sauces, I gotta wing it. So much fun.

How did your hubby enjoy your new dish? Love that you have leftovers.

  8. I love homemade soups. I usually make a big batch to freeze portions for another day.

    1. I freeze my stocks and broths, but rarely the finished soups, as I eat a new one each day. But I have a good friend who freezes her full soups too. She loves it for ready-meals.

  9. I love making soup the same way, whatever I have on hand. Homemade soups are always the best. I had Mexican fried rice with shrimp, it was really yummy!

  10. I am going to consider putting in fresh ginger to my soup ingredients, and yes, they are like yours - anything that happens to be around! :)

    1. I love, love, love, fresh ginger in my bases (and garlic), but the ginger just gives it that extra something. Put too much in though, and it tastes of soap.

  11. I'm just thinking pizza for dinner. I'll be home too late for anything else.

  12. Sounds like a good way to make soup! We have random veggy soup once in awhile, and I do enjoy it--especially if it has meatballs in with the vegetables. Today I made roast (beef) with potatoes. I'm so glad my mom taught me how to make it, as it is so easy--basically just put the ingredients in a pan/pot, and put them in the oven! My sister made pecan pie, always a winner!

    1. Oh my goodness, that sounds yummy. I cannot eat cow in any form but if I could, I'd love to try beef roast.

Glad you learned from your mom. That's the best. And pecan pie. YUM.

    1. I hope you give sweet and sour a go. And really, it can be with less of those ingredients and any way that you want it to be.

  14. Thank you so much for coming back to me re the soup ... I love your 'Magic In A Bowl' idea.
I've also enjoyed reading through all the comments and seen what ideas and foods your readers are eating.
One thing we've quite recently started eating more of is roasted beets and red onion with balsamic vinegar. With Eddie being a Type 2 diabetic certain foods do raise his blood sugar levels, and beets are one of them, but cooked this way he can tolerate a little and they do taste great ...

    All the best Jan

    1. And that's the interesting thing about spiked foods, not everyone reacts the same way, to each food. It's the job of the sick to take the time and learn what spikes them. But with you in his corner, Eddie can't lose. You are a good egg.

PS: Today, I made vegan chili soup. Yummmmmy
