Friday Q: What's Your Favorite Cake?

For me, it's Carrot Cake.  Plant-based, dairy-based, gluten-free, wholemeal, nuts, no nuts, if it's got the words, Carrot Cake, I have to taste it.

Even if just a bite.

Also, I'll never turn down a slice of coconut cake.  I remember Papam (granddad), would go to the corner store and get little TASTYKAKE Coconut Cakes, with the layer of frosting on the top and middle, wrapped in that plastic wrap that no matter how careful my little fingers were, I'd always squish my cake.

Another great memory is Mamam's (grandma), Hungarian Chocolate Torte.  I'd get to help whip the frosting by hand, even though the whisk was bigger than me.  Then when my little arms (I'd use both), were too tired, Mamam and Papam would take over and I'd watch like it was a magic show.

Liquid into frosting.  How'd they do it?

And now, a billion years later, I'm making new cake memories.  Yesterday I made my first real cake.  Though the frosting was much easier to make than memory served, I didn't make enough to cover the entire cake.  That's why in yesterday's picture, you only saw a partial image.  I only had enough to do half a cake.

Surely I would have gotten voted off The Great British Bake Off for that one, and as I sliced it down the middle (of the half-cake), I could hear Mary Berry's comments in my head.  At least I can say, there were no soggy bottoms.

But now I'd love to hear from you.

What's your favorite cake or favorite cake memories?  Is there one cake that you can't turn down?

  1. Bigger than you? That was one big whisk.

  4. If me was ever a lady I'd like to be called Merry Berry, such a delightful name it is :)
I mostly prefer fruit cakes (banana, cherries, citruses), vanilla, peanuts, caramel... I don't like chocolate ones. I love Schwartzvald torte too

  5. I love carrot cake too although a nice piece of chocolate zucchini cake is a close second. Have you seen "O Brother Where Art Thou?" The escaped convicts' country band in it is called "The Soggy Bottom Boys." Love that movie!

    1. I have, I remember that name. Never had chocolate zuke. Sounds good though. I like a spiced zuke bread. Yum.

  7. Good for you with your cake! It looks delicious! My faves are also carrot cake and coconut cake. And then there's the Hickory Nut Cake Mom used to make all the time years ago. The best! It was quite a mess cracking the nuts, but worth it all the way! Unfortunately, they're close to impossible to find now. Have a good weekend!

    1. I googled images for that cake and found formulas. Looks very good, and something I would enjoy making.

      Thanks for the idea.

      Do you make them much?

  11. Best cake I've ever had/made is an orange cake with orange frosting. it has a ton of butter in it which is probably why it's so delicious.

  12. Carrot cake and banana cake are my favourite. Saying that I rarely have a slice of either. Much more of a savoury kinda person. And if there's any icing in sight I cannot eat it. True. No icing for me. Ever. Hate the stuff.

    1. Oh, I forgot. I know it's not really 'cake' per se, but lemon cheesecake is my absolute favourite. Love love love it! And I make a mean one too :)

    2. I never liked icing or frosting until I started making my own. That stuff from yesterday's post. OMG.

Lemon Cheesecake is KILLER, and very much on my list to make.

    3. PS: What is it that you hate about icing and/or frosting? For me, some icings are just too sweet and some frostings are too waxy, is the only way I can describe it. YUCK!

    4. Definitely the sweetness - the stickiness - and the thickness of it. I'm sure some people must put it on with a garden spade. The worse icing of all, however, is undoubtedly, marzipan. Just the thought of it makes me gag ...

    5. I've not tried marzipan yet, I don't think. But I recall recently seeing it in something that I wanted to make. By gosh, cannot recall for sure what it was.

Not a fan of the thickness either. I agree. I do like a nice light fluffy frosting. And I don't mind an icing if it's not so sickly sweet.

      Thanks for playing, Wendy.

  13. I'm not a big cake fan, but when I was little I always had a cake called a Madeline. It was just sponge with jam spread on the outside with coconut sprinkled all over.......Yum! It also had a cherry on the top, that piece of crap was ready made bird food and ended up on the floor!

    1. Thanks for that story, Rayolla. I am excited to make a jammie sponge. Were they jarred cherries? I don't like those either.

  14. What a great post! I really enjoyed hearing about your grandparents. Such a sweet memory.

I'm not a huge fan of cake, but when I enjoy some, I really like carrot cake (which I discovered a couple of years ago...imagine that...), Black Forest Cake, and even a simple lemon cake (reminds me of my mom; she used to make it when we were kids). But at the top of the list is cheesecake. Always! And no fancy types. Just regular cheesecake with strawberries!

    1. Thank you, Martha. I am glad you enjoyed reading it because I enjoyed writing it.

And cheesecake. Yes, please. Very good. Though I cannot call it a cake, I dunno. It's too good to be cake.

    1. Do the different colours taste different? This year when I make beet root powder, I want to try it in the cake.

  16. I like a simple white or yellow cake with either chocolate or a light frosting as opposed to a heavy sugary buttercream.
