This past weekend I got to play with a new ingredient, organic non-hydrogenated shortening. Normally, I find pie crust made with shortening, vile. Hate the taste, texture, just not a fan. That being said, I had $2 coupon for the organic non-hydrogenated kind, so I gave it a go.
Glad I did, because it worked great.
I'd offer you one, but they're gone. Frankenberry didn't even get one. But don't feel too bad for him because he got his very own homemade apple pie, with lattice-topped crust.
And that my little Blueberries, wraps up another Baker's Report. Up next, non-hydrogenated frosting.
Thanks for reading and boogie boogie.
Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alex. Hope you had a great day.
DeleteNot fair, I have processed yum for lunch LOL
ReplyDeleteIan
Processed yum. I don't think I've ever seen those two words, side by side like that.
DeleteI'm never sure what shortening actually is, is it something like margarine?
ReplyDeleteSort of, technically it is any fat that is solid at room temperature. But in the states recipes call for vegetable shortening and it has no flavor.
Deletehere we have so called spread margarine (used for eating on bread, they have flavour) and table margarines (used for baking and usually have no or very mild taste of butter). I'm guessing shortening is then more close to table margarine.
DeleteDezzy: The shortening is all fat, so it helps prevent the gluten strands from fully forming. Sorta shortens the gluten strands, if you will.
DeleteShortening is not supposed to have a taste, but I can taste it and it's vile. To me, it is.
Miss Holly: I know, they say no flavour but by gosh, I can still taste it. Vile crappy stuff, on the whole. I much rather use either an all sweet (unsalted) butter crust, or more recently, a refined coconut oil crust.
Deletethe pies look good
ReplyDeleteThanks bunches.
Delete"Hand-pies"? I'd like one in each hand, please! In Canada, we call these "turnovers."
ReplyDeleteWe call them turnovers here as well. Hand-pies, turnovers and then I have a friend who makes empanadas.
DeleteHand-Pie, Turnovers, or Emanadas ... it's all good eats. Thanks for stopping by.
They sure do look good.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Miss Holly.
DeleteI love hand pies!

ReplyDeleteThanks, William.
DeleteI definitely want some of those...you should sell them online!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment.
DeleteDelicious! OHMYGOSH... Yes, they look soooo good. Much better than the processed turnovers. Homemade all the way!
ReplyDeleteNothing like a good rough puff pastry, filled with yummy fruit. Looking forward to making peach ones. Oh my gosh. So many pies ...
DeleteI love that you didn't share these. That is the best. I wouldn't share them either... especially if there was a whole apple pie to go around.
ReplyDeleteHe did get one bite, to be fair. But he wanted the apple and I wanted the cherry. It's like the perfect marriage.
DeleteThat is perfect!!
