Yesterday I baked my first coffee cake. It was horrible. We tossed it in the bin, that's how bad it was.
That got me thinking about a coffee cake that I had a long time ago. It was a semi-sweet or a bitter-sweet coffee cake, I can't recall for sure.
It was a big round cake, with a swirled layer of chocolate in the center, topped with crumbly goodness. Then topped again with a bittersweet chocolate ganache that always managed to stay the right texture, no matter how long the cake lasted.
Best coffee cake, in the history of ever.
Which brings me to Friday's Question: Do you eat coffee cake? And if so, what's the best one you ever had?
Ya, I eat coffee cake. The best I've ever had was made by this guy named Dave and it had raspberry swirls in it.

This one didn't have any coffee in the formula. It's okay, it wasn't my formula. And I learned a lot from the bake, and that's a good thing.

DeleteI bet your coffeecake was better than you thought it was. I like mine loaded with cinnamon, brown sugar, huge pecans and a drizzle of icing. Though, your favorite sounds mighty good.

ReplyDeleteWhat was exactly wrong with yours? If you put instant coffee or cappuccino powder in your batter it should be good. A tablespoon should do it
It was a vegan coffee cake. The recipe belongs to someone else. There were several technical issues with the formula. In the end, the cake lacked flavour but worse, felt raw in the mouth, even though it was fully baked.

PS: Mary Berry has a Cappuccino cake too. I put it on my Must Bake List. I bet yours was killer good as well.

Deletethere are some sponges that are creamy and rawish, that is the way they are supposed to be :) Mine are designed to be almost creamy, but still baked. I don't like dry sponge cakes. And since I don't use eggs, but yoghurt, buttermilk or lekvart, the sponge is always very creamy like in your fudge cakes.

DeleteThe coffee cake formula wasn't supposed to be raw or rawish or creamy. There were many technical issues with the formula, but since it wasn't mine, I wanted to test it as was.
Excellent learning experience. But sadly, not edible. But that's okay with me. The more I do this, the more I learn.
And that's what I love about baking.
I like my coffee cake with cinnamon and brown sugar. And the crunchy stuff on top. No nuts though. Don't like 'em.

DeleteThat's how I always thought of coffee cake as well. In fact, I've never had one that had coffee in the batter. Instead, we at it with a cuppa coffee.

I don't eat it that often, 'cause well it's still cake. :) The best one I ever had was a cinnamon one and it had sour cream in it. I had it, I think, just after I graduated HS. Got the recipe, lost the recipe. And I though I've come close to replicating it, it's missing something.

Well, I don't eat coffee 'cake', but I do like coffee and walnut muffins - occasionally. Delicious. Made with 'real' coffee as apposed to instant (yuk).

DeleteAs I've understood it, it's meant to be eaten with coffee (yuck! That stuff is toxic waste), but that's the only association. I've had coffee cakes with cinnamon, maple syrup, and strawberry.
