Friday Q: Best Coffee Cake You Ever Had?

Yesterday I baked my first coffee cake.  It was horrible.  We tossed it in the bin, that's how bad it was.

That got me thinking about a coffee cake that I had a long time ago.  It was a semi-sweet or a bitter-sweet coffee cake, I can't recall for sure.

It was a big round cake, with a swirled layer of chocolate in the center, topped with crumbly goodness.  Then topped again with a bittersweet chocolate ganache that always managed to stay the right texture, no matter how long the cake lasted.

Best coffee cake, in the history of ever.

Which brings me to Friday's Question:  Do you eat coffee cake?  And if so, what's the best one you ever had?

  1. Ya, I eat coffee cake. The best I've ever had was made by this guy named Dave and it had raspberry swirls in it.

    1. I love raspberry. And swirls are heavenly. I gotta try making one that like.

Your recent post was neat. I liked seeing the stages and where you want to take your mini.

      Cheers and boogie boogie.

  2. Can't stand coffee, so I don't think I've ever had a good coffee cake.
Sorry you had to chuck your cake.

    1. This one didn't have any coffee in the formula. It's okay, it wasn't my formula. And I learned a lot from the bake, and that's a good thing.

Have an oogie boogie weekend, Alex.

  3. Oh, yes! Love a good coffee cake...but I don't drink coffee. My favorite is gooey butter cake.

  4. I bet your coffeecake was better than you thought it was. I like mine loaded with cinnamon, brown sugar, huge pecans and a drizzle of icing. Though, your favorite sounds mighty good.

    1. How much are you willing to lose? I'd love another FREE trip to the bakeware store.

  5. Under DEZZ ON TOUR button at my place you will find few of the guest posts that I did about my recipes, and I think one of them has my famous cappuccino cake :)
What was exactly wrong with yours? If you put instant coffee or cappuccino powder in your batter it should be good. A tablespoon should do it

    1. It was a vegan coffee cake. The recipe belongs to someone else. There were several technical issues with the formula. In the end, the cake lacked flavour but worse, felt raw in the mouth, even though it was fully baked.

Quite unpleasant, but a good learning experience.

PS: Mary Berry has a Cappuccino cake too. I put it on my Must Bake List. I bet yours was killer good as well.

Cake, I had no idea how much fun they were!

    2. PS: I came back to tell you that I googled Dezzy's Cappuccino Cake, images. And there was the one from Mel's page. I remember that one now. Very nice indeed.

    3. there are some sponges that are creamy and rawish, that is the way they are supposed to be :) Mine are designed to be almost creamy, but still baked. I don't like dry sponge cakes. And since I don't use eggs, but yoghurt, buttermilk or lekvart, the sponge is always very creamy like in your fudge cakes.

    4. Yeah, that fudge cake was killer good. No dairy or eggs. All vegan. I'll make that one again for sure.

The coffee cake formula wasn't supposed to be raw or rawish or creamy. There were many technical issues with the formula, but since it wasn't mine, I wanted to test it as was.

Excellent learning experience. But sadly, not edible. But that's okay with me. The more I do this, the more I learn.

And that's what I love about baking.

  6. I like my coffee cake with cinnamon and brown sugar. And the crunchy stuff on top. No nuts though. Don't like 'em.

I always thought of a coffee cake as a cake that went well with coffee--sweet, but not too sweet.

    1. I like it with a crumble like that too. Never had it with nuts but I do fancy pecans. No nuts at all for you then?

That's how I always thought of coffee cake as well. In fact, I've never had one that had coffee in the batter. Instead, we at it with a cuppa coffee.

      Have a groovy weekend.

  7. I'm not the world's biggest fan of coffeecake. Most of the ones I've ever had have been dry, dry, dry.

I'll post some photos of my new digs probably in the fall once my furniture is in place and all the clutter has been cleared away. At the moment I'm waiting for a loveseat delivery.

    1. Yuck on the dry, dry, dry.

Groovy on the loveseat. Understandable about the clutter bits. We moved two rooms around and now we have leftover stuff that I dunno what the heck to do with. Donated some of it already.

Anyway, much fun to you in this groovy new chapter. Looking forward to hearing more about your adventure. My email is on the right of the blog, should you want to chat.

      Cheers and boogie boogie.

  8. I don't eat it that often, 'cause well it's still cake. :) The best one I ever had was a cinnamon one and it had sour cream in it. I had it, I think, just after I graduated HS. Got the recipe, lost the recipe. And I though I've come close to replicating it, it's missing something.

    1. Oh no, something is missing. That's a bummer. But I know what you mean. You know, this is dumb, but I never though of coffee cake as real cake before. I mean it is, but I for some silly reason, I never thought of it as such.

  9. Oh, yeah. I've rarely met a cake I didn't like.

My favorite coffee cake is lemon blueberry with a streusal topping and a drizzle of icing. Yum.

    Happy weekend!

    1. Lemon blueberry. This is a combination that I am seeing a lot these days, including in my new bake books. I never had that combo before.

      Sounds good though.

  11. I haven't had coffee cake in a long time. I prefer non-chocolate sweets.

    1. Non chocolate treats are good too. Do you have a favorite? I like the raspberry one that Anne was talking about at the top of the comments. Ohh, or even a peach one. I'd try that.

      Have a groovy weekend.

    1. That's okay. All part of the learning. This recipe belonged to someone else and from that, I got to learn what doesn't work.

      Cheers and boogie boogie.

  13. Well, I don't eat coffee 'cake', but I do like coffee and walnut muffins - occasionally. Delicious. Made with 'real' coffee as apposed to instant (yuk).

    1. There wasn't any coffee in her recipe. It was meant to be eaten with coffee though. Walnut muffins. I love walnuts. And pecans .. and cashews and ... and ... and ...

  14. As I've understood it, it's meant to be eaten with coffee (yuck! That stuff is toxic waste), but that's the only association. I've had coffee cakes with cinnamon, maple syrup, and strawberry.

    1. That's how I grew up with it to mean as well. Maybe it's different in different areas.

  15. never had coffee nor the cake

  16. I don't think I've ever had coffee cake. Or it's possible that I did, and I just don't remember. However, a lemony taste would be great. Or some type of cinnamon cake. Yum!

  17. The best coffee cake I ever had was from one of our grocery store bakeries. It has a beautiful caramel and cinnamon streusel on top. YUM!
