Plaits, Pizza & Pizzelles

Here's my second go at Paul Hollywood's 8 plaited loaf.  I wanted to correct the end issues I had last time (see last post).  Though my ends are getting better, the middle went a little wiggle waggly.  Draft 3 will be tighter all around.  But that's the fun of this, getting to do it again.

Meanwhile, for supper we enjoyed homemade pizza (including sauce).  Usually I mix mozzarella with smoked provolone but when provolone prices pushed too high, I gave Aldi's sliced Muenster a go.  Turned out WAY better.  Super melty and just a delight.  It also works better in calzones.  Now I don't have to worry about the high price.

So take that smoked provolone.  You can suck it.

For dessert, we had my almond pizzelles.  The trickiest part, is convincing Tim that one tin is NOT a single serving.

That's wraps up today's Baker's Lab - I had fun playing but today I'm cleaning the house.  Well, actually I'm writing to you and NOT cleaning the house, whist I chat on IM with my girlfriend Kris.  So it's like I'm cleaning, only not so much.

You Boogerbutts have a good one.  Boogie boogie.

  6. Those almond cookies look lovely! Is it a complex recipe?
The prices of cheese are extremely high here too... so high that I don't even remember when I ate dairy cheese last time in my life. I mostly eat vegetable fat based cheese for vegetarians.

    1. The prices drive me mad. For cheese. But in this case, it worked out for the best. How are the veggie cheeses? We have them here but it's been so long since I tried them that I can't remember what I thought.

My formula is a simple one. The only thing with this is the time, as my machine only makes two pizzelles at once. And I make mine minis, instead of full-sized to stretch my batter.

Do you have a pizzelle maker?

    2. Most of the veggie cheeses are horrible here, but I know one local brand that is good and very yummy, they have smoked cheese and shroom flavoured one too, so I mostly buy that from time to time when the money allows :) I adore breaded cheese.

Nope, this is the first time I hear about pizzelle... I thought those were little pizzas when you first mentioned it :)

    3. You know what? You just gave me an idea for little pizzas. I wonder what would be, should I put some of my pizza dough in the pizzelle iron. Would the dough bake? Could I then add toppings for a quick blast in the oven. Hmmm ....

As my Mamam would say in her thick Hungarian accent ... "Now I thinking ..."

Thanks, Dez. I'm gonna give it a go.

    4. When I used to make little pizzas for catering occasions, I'd just cut glass sized circles of pizza dough, put sauce on it and cheese and what you put on regular pizza and then just bake them :)

  7. Delicious looking! My mouth is watering... I LOVE homemade pizza. I haven't done that in years. When I was a kid, we used to make homemade pizza regularly. It was sooooo good.

  10. That loaf looks like an extra wide, extra delectable challah (the bread we Jews eat on Shabbat). Yummy.

    Have a sweet weekend,

    1. It does look similar to Jewish bread, I agree. My favorite Jewish bread to make is bagel. And two weekends ago I made teeny rolls in the shape of a Jewish star.

Do you have a favorite Jewish bread?

  14. Totally stunning bread, I am so impressed! I am hopeless at making something that so pretty, well done. Nothing like homemade pizza too. I'm always surprised at how long it takes though but it's worth it.

    1. Thanks, Suzie. I make either a single or double dough batch every morning. Then I either stash it in the fridge or let it ferment on the counter. Then when I am done with my chores, or it's almost supper, I do the rest. That way, it's there waiting for me, instead of me waiting for it.
