I've made meatloaf once before. Only then I was a veghead, so I don't know how it tasted. Now that I eat meat, I'm ready to make give it another go.
Linda adds shredded carrots to hers. That sounds yummy. The one I made had onions, garlic and celery. My next one will have carrots.
Do you eat meatloaf? Ever try carrots? What goes in your loaf? Beef? Turkey? Bean curd? Toe jam?
How about that tomato glaze thing on top? Good? No good?
Do tell.
Sorry, I always found meatloaf disgusting.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping mine doesn't turn out like the one we served when I was a prep cook. It was buy-in meatloaf, and smelled worse than dog food.
DeleteYet, as disgusting at it looked and smelled, people still ordered it. Ack.
I love meatloaf - especially my mom's sweet & sour meatloaf :)
ReplyDeleteSweet & Sour Meatloaf? Sounds neat. What makes it both sweet and sour?
DeleteI'm not a meatloaf fan. I have had one or two I like. I can't remember what was in them though. I do know one was "frosted" with mashed potatoes.
ReplyDeleteI love the "frosted" with mash bit.
DeleteYum. A nice mix of veal and lamb tastes amazing.
ReplyDeleteI've never eaten either of those meats. What makes the combo amazing? Is the texture more melt in the mouth than beef?
DeleteLove meatloaf, the glaze topping really adds to it, but I should try carrots.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Christine. Sounds like the glaze topping is popular.
DeleteOn a similar note to shredded carrots I like adding shredded beetroot to my mince based sauces - adds a good texture and a nice earthy taste.
ReplyDeleteI love organic baby beetroots. Oh my good gosh, those are heavenly. I'll give that a go, thanks bunches.
DeleteMy meatloaf recipe is pretty basic...meat, bread crumbs, egg to bind, onion, green pepper, and S/P. Form into free form loaf and bake until almost done, then cover with canned tomato sauce and bake some more until the sauce is slightly caramelized.
ReplyDeleteIt's good hot and cold.
Thanks Kathy. And thanks for the coffee grinder information.
DeleteI'm learning that meatloaf is good hot or cold, that seems popular. That's how I feel about baked eggplant.
Num, num, num.
Gawd, I haven't made meatloaf since Christ was a boy. Never used carrots or other shredded veg. I vote "yes" to the tomato glaze on top. There's nothing better than a cold meatloaf sandwich on white bread of course!
ReplyDeleteSince christ was born, lololololol.
DeleteHow's your blogger break going?
There are so many ways to make good meatloaf, but it all depents on taste. We add some cumin to the meat, it gives it a very different taste. Carrots? That's one I have to remember. Oh and it's a yes for teh tomato glaze!
ReplyDeleteGreetings
Peter
Ah, cumin. I didn't think of that one. Interesting. Thanks. And I see another yes for the tomato glaze.
DeleteBest trick I've used: Set the loaf on a wire rack when you bake it. That way the grease drains off.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, a nice mildly spicy tomato topping is required.
That's a good one too. Thanks, Doug.
DeleteI too am not a fan of meatloaf, I think Alex is right. I have made one or two in my time though and always used onions. Celery and carrots are good too. I agree, a topping is required.
ReplyDeleteLooks like lots agree with the topping. I don't recall topping Tim's back when I made it, long ago.
DeleteBut then, I didn't know, as I've never eaten meatloaf before.
Know I know. Thanks.
My Mum made the best meatloaf and she put tomato sauce on the top. I am not sure all of what she put in it but it made the best sandwiches the next day.
ReplyDeleteI used to make one that called something like "meatloaf today pate' tomorrow" you added cream cheese and it was good. I still have a few old recipes I need to see if I still have this one.
cheers, parsnip
Meatloaf today, pate tomorrow. That's a good one. And hey, Happy Square Dog Friday.
DeleteI hated my mother's meatloaf, but then she put green peppers in hers and I can't stand the taste of those. I like the recipe for meatloaf in the Betty Crocker cookbook, though. And so does my family. I just squeeze ketchup on the top before baking.
ReplyDeleteI know, shocker--I actually cooked something, huh?
I almost fell out of the chair.
DeleteI frequently add carrots and shredded cheese to my meatloaf.
ReplyDeleteCheese, nice tough. I've added cheese in the middle of two beef patties and then cooked them together, but I didn't think about it in a meatloaf.
DeleteGroovy, thanks.
I usually put eggs and oatmeal in mine and sometimes to the tomato paste things on top but most of the time just cheese. My kids aren't fans so I haven't made it in a long time.
ReplyDeleteDoes the oatmeal make it dry?
DeleteI can't cook, but I love meatloaf. Collin and I once wrote a song about my mom's meatloaf....
ReplyDeleteThanks for singing me the Meatloaf Song, on your blog. Made my day. Great stuff.
DeleteWe're thinking about doing a music video, if we can figure out how to make the burning meatloaf escape from the oven!
DeleteI add a packet of Lipton's onion soup.
ReplyDeleteI can see that working, nicely.
DeleteThanks :-)
The place I go to for lunch and dinner makes meatloaf panini sandwiches among their selections, so when I feel like that, I'll pick one up.
ReplyDeleteThat's a neat idea, I hadn't thought of making them into hot sandwich like that. Cheese too?
DeleteSorry, never made it and funnily enough, have no real idea what goes into it. I eat it about once a year I suppose but when the mood hits, it's oh so perfect....with gravy and mash too, mind you.
ReplyDeleteGravy and mash is how I think I made it for my husband, back in the day, but I can't recall for sure.
DeleteThanks.
I've never been a great fan of meatloaf (even when I did eat meat). But I have a suspicion that yours, Ivy, would be delicious :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm thinking it's gonna take me a few tries, but that's okay. That's the fun of working things out.
DeleteI like meatloaf once in awhile, and I add a ketchup/mustard/brown sugar glaze on top. Delicious! It's as follows: ½ cup ketchup, ¼ cup mustard and ¼ cup brown sugar. You can adjust each ingredient to your preference.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm finally here to visit! Dinner was great. Total success. And my daughter's new boyfriend is terrific. I'm sipping tea as I write this and waiting to hubby to get home from his night out playing music, so we can enjoy a little TV and popcorn. It's been a good day. I hope yours was great, too!
Hey, Martha. So glad that the new boyfriend is terrific. This is wonderful news. Tea sounds good too.
DeleteI'm in the other room with the pups because Tim is gaming online and Bug goes bat crap crazy as soon as Tim puts his headphones on.
Enjoy your popcorn. Sounds good.
PS: Yes, got to play in the kitchen. Woohoo.
Ohhhhhhhhh.
ReplyDeleteSince I am prone to getting gout, I really try not to eat beef. I can eat pork, chicken, lamb and fish, but beef is my enemy. I do love meatloaf, though, and when I made it I always put onions and garlic in it. Enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the gout. I'm not sure what that is but it doesn't sound fun.
DeleteLamb is something I'd like to try. Love garlic as well. Thanks.
Meatloaf works best with 2 meats or 3 ground meats mixed: beek, pork, pork sausage, veal, lamb. Turkey is okay but only with itself.
ReplyDeleteI typically mix the meat with 1 egg, and haf a cup to a cup of crumbs or oatmeal. I'll mix in a little spices and some sauce bbq or ketchup being most common and bake.
I don't like to add veggies into the meat load itself usually but every now and again i'll form a big hollow loaf and stuff it with spinach mushrooms and cheese and close it up prior to cooking.(leave a couple holes for juices to escape).
Howdy JD. Just checked out your blog. Looks like you haven't been there for awhile. Do you have another blog where your art goes?
DeleteThanks, yes, I agree about the mixed meats. I do that for a few meat dishes and boy, the combos are nice.
Love spinach, so yummy. Thanks for sharing your ideas and please let me know if and when you start blogging. I'd like to see more of your art.
Cheers and boogie boogie.
I certainly have to update my art blog more often, thanks for giving it a look.
DeleteRe meatloaf I mentioned above: If you leave out the mushrooms and use the right cheese you can call it meatloaf florentine.
That is a good idea. My husband loves spinach but doesn't eat mushrooms.
DeleteI put you on the gamer blogroll for now but when I make my new artist roll, I'll drop you in that one.
What's kept you away from blogging?
I like to put carrots, celery, onions and zuchini in a food processor and then mix it in with my meat. I also add cumin. It's so moist and yummy. No catsup top! Yuck!
ReplyDeleteGood way to use up some zukes, cool, thanks. You're the second to mention cumin. I hadn't thought of using that spice. Thankfully, I have some on hand.
DeleteThanks for dropping by :-)
I added grated carrots and chopped waltnuts ivy:)
ReplyDeleteI love walnuts. Never thought about adding them to meatloaf. Neato. Thanks.
DeleteYou already know my recipe!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your evening, Ivy!
Is it raining there?
Cheers!
Linda :o)
Yes, I do. You inspired me with your carrots. Thanks.
DeleteRain all day but that nice slow drizzle rain that I love. Even got out today after a week of being all hummed up with the leg. So fun getting out.
Got four little reindeer cookie cutters. So fun.
How is it there? Rain too? Snow?
Rain...dreary....yuck!
