I'm hesitant to write this because a few weeks ago, if someone told me that they got rid of 80 percent of their personal belongings, I would have thought that was extreme and maybe even, a little nuts.
But now, that's just where I'm headed, and I could not be happier. I started Thursday at 50 percent and ended the night at 60 percent of my own belongings, gone. I feel light, free and happy. Beyond thrilled. Truly.
But enough about me, I want to hear from you. Friday Question: Have you ever done a major purge? How did you feel?
If you've never done a purge, would you and if so, what percentage of your stuff would you be comfortable ditching and/or donating?
I go through my closet every once in awhile, but don't think I have ever done a "major" purge. I'm pretty moderate in both how much stuff I have, and how much I give away.
ReplyDeleteWe've purged maybe twenty percent once. It did feel good to get rid of all that junk.
ReplyDeleteI've never done quite that huge of a purge but I try not to accumulate a bunch of excess stuff and regularly small parts of it. On the other hand -- BOOKS! Oh yeah, I've easily purged 80-90% of all the books I've ever owned. At one time, I used to keep them but they just mount up and take up WAY too much room. Plus they make moving a nightmare. So many! So heavy!
ReplyDeleteI bet I've gotten rid of 60 percent of what was in our basement, but most of that was stuff we didn't use. (So I don't know if it counts.)
ReplyDeleteIt very much counts.
DeleteLast time we did a major purge was when we moved. That was 19 years ago! Aaack! I think this is the longest I've lived in one house. Oh wait. It is!! :)
ReplyDeleteGood question! I have a hard time throwing things out...I'm not a hoarder or anything but I just think that I might need it at some point. (I guess I do kind of sound like a hoarder lol) however I go through stages where I donate to a local church lots of clothes (that don't fit) and shoes and I do feel much better about myself after I do!
ReplyDeleteI have been known to purge on a regular basis so I would say in all, 80%. And yes, it feels good!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm moderate in terms of the amount of stuff I have, so I haven't needed to purge.
ReplyDeletewow that's an amazing purge, I would have to be forced to do that, maybe like moving.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I am also moderate in the amount of stuff I have, like William, as I cannot stand clutter and hate to feel cooped up so for myself, less is more, and I am much happier with less.
ReplyDeleteI think we'd all be happier with fewer possessions.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteI purge my books. Which are my main weakness.
I probably (definitely) need to purge in other areas too. My partner does as well. He still has (and refuses to relinquish) the socks he wore to boarding school. Over forty years ago.
Interesting question and answers.
ReplyDeleteWe once kept a bonfire going for three days with throw-outs when we were moving from country to country.
Congrats to you! I do a mini-purge every few years.
ReplyDeleteI am a recovering hoarder. (Not kidding. It was a dark time in my life.) I probably have about 10% of what I used to have and have to be very, very Mindful of what I bring into my home and hyper-vigilant about getting rid of things when they no longer serve a purpose.
ReplyDeleteNo can Do.... we love my Collection...and can tell you of even every piece of paper included... this "Mess" is All that I have to show for my Life... I would rather be Dead than to part with my beloved items...
ReplyDeleteA great weekend to you and Gothridge Manor..
60% sounds like a lot. Congratulations! I don't know if I could that... perhaps when we downsize which is still many years away?
ReplyDeleteOnly of painted armies from my collections over the years! Usually to fund another one!
ReplyDeleteI have done a major purge like that before when me and my kids downsized to a small apartment after my ex and I split. Best thing ever. Both the split and the major purge :) In the present time, the most amazing man in the world and I will doing a big purge when we finally move from this house to a smaller one. I've already started getting rid of stuff and it's like a party!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is amazing, way to go! I have purged quite a few times in my life thanks to all the moving I have done. The farther the move, the deeper the purge. I've actually come to terms with my stuff and no longer want to let go of any more stuff if I don't have to. That said, I only buy tools and things I really use now!
ReplyDeleteI do try and have a sort out / sort through a couple of times a year ...
ReplyDeleteWishing you a great weekend
All the best Jan
We went from a home that was over 1500 sqf with a big shed to a home that is 500 sqf with a very small shed... we were ruthless... so happy to be junk-free now!
ReplyDeleteI know I hold onto stuff (altho admittedly a lot of my stuff is books) but due to an upcoming move I've recently gotten rid of things that don't need to come with me. And I love donating whenever possible.
ReplyDeleteThanks all who commented. It was great to read them.
ReplyDeleteWishing you all a yummy week.
I'm not a saver. I get rid of my stuff all the time. Whenever my husband can't find something, he accuses me of getting rid of it. LOL
ReplyDeleteMy purging takes place when I paint the house, which is something like once in six years !!!
ReplyDeleteThese desserts look so Good....
