Today I'm resting in the movie room with a sore throat, watching Lucy. Which brings us to Friday's Question.
Have you ever eaten snails? If not, would you?
Me? I dunno. I would want to, but given the opportunity, I'm not sure I'd be able to do it. Maybe if they weren't in a shell, and looking up at me. Maybe if they were chopped.
Just not sure. How about you?
PS: I love when Lucy says, "Waiter. This food has snails in it." And then puts that thing on her nose. See below.
I've seen it a million times, I still bust out laughing.
As I sit here hungry, I would have to say yes I would eat a snail - known as escargot. See, the French have a way of making anything seem edible. Time to go have me some eggs. Nice post. Cheers!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I know escargot. But a snail is a snail. Call it whatever fancy word you wish, it comes from my garden. Which doesn't bother me. It's the little eyes looking back.

Snail dishes don't really look like live snails. They look like a shell with some meat and sauce in them.

That's pretty good. I don't see anything there. This is a fear food for me that I want to get past and give it a go.

If any help remember they are soft body invertebrates so any appendages you see when they are alive is probably destroyed by the cooking process

DeleteThey are a lot of work for what you get. The taste depends on the sauce or how they are cooked. The snail itself provides the texture of the food.
ReplyDeletePretty much the same issues that arise with mushrooms. If you don' t like the feel of mushrooms in your mouth, it doesn't matter how good the taste of the sauce or what they are cooked in is.
For me my reaction to eating snails was meh. The same feeling I get when eating oysters or scallops. On the other hand I really like Mushrooms, and clam strips.

DeleteAnd I love clams and mushrooms. Taste and texture. But it's getting past their little faces looking at me. I think in the right sauce and chopped, I could do it.
But looking up at me ... not sure.
I also want to try sardines but again, the heads. I dunno. I dunno.

PS: I started using coconut oil in my chocolate chip cookies. So fluffy.
I've eaten snails, but for the price you pay at a restaurant. it's not worth it. Sardines on toast was a staple in our home and I'm sure if you look on the internet you'll find recipes you'd like. But you haven't really lived until you've eaten thistles.
ReplyDeleteI bought Sardines for the pups to write my own recipe for a treat for them. So I figure when I write that up, I'll give it a taste.

Never ate thistles that I know of.
Fun to try new things. Oxtail is something I want to try but it not a fear food for me. Just something that I'm curious about.

I've had many opportunities to eat snails in restaurants but have never had the nerve. I understand they're quite chewy. But I've eaten frogs legs!

DeleteSam: When I eat clams, I notice the ones I make at home are less chewy than canned or what they are like when I have had them out.

For the snails, it's something different when it's in the plate : a lot of preparation, cleaning, sauce etc.. so they don't look like snails on the table .... except the shells !
Can they be taken out of the shells, then cooked in a sauce? I would like to try frog legs and also rattlesnake.

In my region, there's a recipe with snails without shells cooked in a wine sauce: delicious !
DeleteSardines are common here : cooked on the BBQ, it's delicious (with potatoes and salt butter!)
In oil, it's wonderful too !

BBQ? That's interesting. Tim just left to get propane for our grill. And potatoes with butter and salt, love that combo.
DeleteIf someone gave me the snails in a sauce, not in a shell, I think that would be easier. I have a feeling that I'll like them, once I'm not afraid of them.
Tim has eaten rattlesnake and said it was very good. That's on my to try list too.
Fish eggs, I've not had either.

My husband has eaten snails (we were on a cruise). They just looked like mushrooms to me, but I wouldn't eat one (I'm not all that crazy about mushrooms). I didn't see any eyes staring back up at him, either. In fact, I never even THOUGHT about that until now. Thanks for that, by the way! :)

My husband loves snails, but I cannot even stand the thought of eating them. No way that I'd ever eat snails. I don't even want to touch oysters or clams or mussels. Anything that would feel slimy in my mouth makes me gag.

Nothing better than I Love Lucy! I shared the photo of her and Ethel at the chocolate factory of my Facebook page a while ago, LOL. When it comes to snails? Given the opportunity and proper pressure, yes, I would try them. I want to be more of a foodie hedonist than foodie nun.
