However later that day when I bumped my thumb -- well, that really hurt.

Alex: I had my fingers tucked when chopping but somehow I lost focus and my thumb made way under the knife.
But I don't have to do dishes for awhile so there's my silver lining.
Ouch! I'm sorry to hear about your thumb. I hope it heals up fast!
In the meantime, don't hesitate to use it as leverage to get Tim to do stuff for you. Start off your requests with "my thumb hurts" and he can't possibly say no.

Julia Child rocks. I remember her admonition that when it comes to cooking "You've got to take a 'What the hell' attitude towards things." I always feel like she's got my back in the kitchen, no matter how far off the rails things are going.
Battle or kitchen scars are part of kitchen life, my hands are a testament to this, be proud of them. I watched a short documentary on her this morning!
So sorry to hear about your thumb! I did that while doing prep work slicing lemons...with an electric lemon slicer. My thumb slid just a little too far up on the lemon when I was about halfway through one of the lemons. The juice was not a nice addition to the cut :)
I sliced off the tip of my index finger on a meat slicer (Not using the guard properly - let that be a lesson, kids.) and it grew back. It was only as thick as a slice of pepperoni, and it's now whiter than the rest of the finger, but it's round, not flat.
Erg, I cringe for you and your poor thumb. Nice little band-aid face though, cute. ;o) Happy b-day to Julia Child, though she's not around to see it. She lives on through her recipes!
I figured as much. We love it too and this year I want to really decorate because last year we couldn't due to a landscaping project. Thanks for the rooting, I'm up against some very popular blogger chicks so my odds are uber low LOL
